January 2016 – Who would have thought…

… nine years ago when the former Auckland City Council bought a site on Ponsonby Road, that as a community, we would be designing how this space will be used?

254 Ponsonby Road is to be redeveloped into a civic space as signaled in the Ponsonby Road Masterplan. A subsequent and site-specific public consultation undertaken in September – November 2014 resulted in 77% of submitters choosing the full site, open space option. As a result, the Waitemata Local Board has initiated an exciting community-led design process that is now underway to achieve this desired outcome. A small group of local people is working together to raise awareness around what community-led design means and how it will be applied to the site.

Simply, ‘community-led design’ is an approach whereby the community gets to shape and influence all key decisions. This will involve local people developing a collective vision, developing a design brief informed by local input, enabling decision-making throughout the design process and signing off key stages of the design.

The next step involves establishing the ‘facilitation group’ to guide the project.

We invite you to find out more and participate in this community-led development of a full site open space at 254 Ponsonby Road.
