Thank you for your enquiry regarding the ‘Shovel Ready’ infrastructure projects that central government requested from councils earlier this month.
The Mayor has asked me to respond to your email because I coordinated development of the ‘Shovel Ready’ list of projects for the council.
Auckland Council provided our list of priority infrastructure projects for funding to the government on 14 April. You can read more about our response and see the full list of projects online here.
The top 30 projects that we provided were those which not only met the government’s criteria but also ranked most highly against the benefits criteria, such as social equity, geographic spread, Māori outcomes and climate change/sustainability.
In addition to the list online, the Ponsonby Park upgrade was included in a longer list of projects that we sent to the government for further discussion if more funding is available. We included these projects to demonstrate to central government the pipeline of infrastructure projects that are being prepared for delivery and the high need for additional infrastructure funding in Tāmaki Makaurau
The projects submitted by Auckland Council, along with those from other regions, are being collated by Crown Infrastructure Partners and will be considered by the government in May.
At this stage we are unclear when funding decisions will be made by the government. If they signal a willingness to work on any additional projects after the first round of ‘shovel ready’ projects are confirmed for funding, we will then discuss our ‘long-list’ of projects with them.
